If you're familiar with the Reynolds Aero line of wheels, you know that they're quite unmistakably the fastest wheels on the planet
If you're not familiar, you're about to learn why
We understand that this is a bold statement, but as you'll soon find out, the Reynolds 72 Aero delivers uncompromising speed with a level of stability that's quite simply unparalleled
Now, we're going to be forward -- the complexity of the Aero design is deep, but we'll walk through it together
To start, one needs to understand the prevalent ideology in aerodynamic wheel design, and to do so, we need to understand drag
What is it? Simply put, it's the restraining force that acts on the wheel when its direction of motion is counter to the free stream of airflow
Now, airflow near the surface of a wheel is turbulent by nature, and when it comes close to the rim surface, it becomes a turbulent boundary layer
This is the start of two kinds of drag, skin friction and pressure drag
Currently, wheel makers are attempting to harness the turbulent layer, reattaching it at the rear section of the rim
The reasoning behind this is that the system reduces pressure drag, but in return, the wheel sees gains in skin friction
However, this is viewed as a comprising trade off, as skin friction has around a ten-fold lower drag value than pressure drag
To maximize this turbulent system, we've been seeing builders create a constant, rounded edge at the spoke face
For those attempting it, it's been viewed as a leap forward in design
However, Reynolds finds it to be counterintuitive
We'll explain
You see, the science of aerodynamics has developed almost as a case of supply and demand
As aviation technology develops, engineers are forced to develop more efficient airfoil designs, and these designs take the shape of what's called a NACA profile -- think of a stretched out tear drop shape
In recent years, though, some wheel designers have started to view the NACA profile as insufficient to the ...

Mavic Ksyrium Elite WTS Wheelset - Clincher Black, Shimano/SRAM 11-speed

Mavic Ksyrium Elite WTS Wheelset - Clincher Black, Shimano/SRAM 11-speed

The Mavic Ksyrium line has one of the most stellar reputations in the wheel industry for producing bombproof and multi-faceted wheelsets that can tackle almost any road riding or racing situation
The Mavic Ksyrium Elite WTS Clincher Wheelset has improved on this legacy with a redesign to better accommodate the shifting trend towards wider road tires while still maintaining its legendary versatility and durability
The big news for this Ksyrium is a widened internal rim width, up to 17mm from the 15mm of previous Ksyriums -- which may sound tiny, but it's a huge difference when you move from a 23mm to a 25mm tire
For both 23mm and 25mm tires, the wider rim makes for less of a bulging light bulb effect than a narrower rim with the same size tire, because the tire beads are able to sit at a wider stance on the rim
Combining less sidewall bulge with more air volume due to that wider stance translates to more stability when cornering and a reduced chance of pinch flats getting in the way of your ride time than wheels with narrower rims
While the trend towards using 25mm tires opens up doors for all sorts of math puns related to composite rims and numbers, it also serves a real purpose to positively impact ride quality
The wider tire reduces rolling resistance by as much as 13% when compared to a 23mm tire at the same tire pressure -- so more power gets allocated to forward speed instead of fighting friction with the pavement
Wider tires also give riders a comfier ride by running a lower tire pressure
At 20psi lower, a 25mm tire will have the same rolling resistance and a much more forgiving road feel than a 23mm tire
With this in mind, Mavic pairs 25mm tires with each Ksyrium Elite wheelset
Along with the wider rim, Mavic utilizes its Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D) process to create the classic Ksyrium rim shape, which is milled between each spoke
This process serves to reduce rim weight and lower the rotating mass of the wheel for better resp...

Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 Elite Wheelset - Clincher White, Shimano/SRAM 11-Speed

Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 Elite Wheelset - Clincher White, Shimano/SRAM 11-Speed

The Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 Elite Clincher Wheelset strikes a balance between the aerodynamics of carbon rims and the cost-efficiency and durability of an alloy clincher
While this wheelset isn't as light as some of Mavic's highest-tier offerings, it makes up for any gram differences with a much more wallet-friendly price tag and durability that won't make you hang it up on training days
Mavic fashions the rim using its TgMax rim tempering and construction process
This means that an alloy spine is the anchor for an aerodynamic cross-section built using different resins and 3k carbon fiber fabric
To minimize the braking issues that are all too common in carbon wheels, the rims are then cured to realign the carbon crystals
This curing and the better heat dissipation of the alloy core give the rims a higher glass transition temperature (Tg) , which is the point where the stiff, efficient carbon violently deforms
Higher Tg means less chance of wheel failure during heavy braking on long, steep descents
Aluminum inserts under the lower rim bed anchor the spokes, leaving the upper rim bed intact to increase stiffness and reliability
The end product is an aero rim with the stiffness of carbon and the durability of alloy
The hubs feature the FTS-L system, which utilizes steel inserts to reinforce the area where force is transferred through the hub and allows for more energy efficient power transfer
The rims are finished with Mavic's Pro GripLink and PowerLink tires, both utilizing a hard center strip with grippy sides for confident cornering and low rolling resistance on the straights
Each wheelset also comes complete with quick-release skewers, carbon-specific brake pads, and a multifunction adjustment wrench.

Stan's NoTubes Crest MK3 29in Boost Wheelset Black, 15x110/12x148mm, Shimano/SRAM

Stan's NoTubes Crest MK3 29in Boost Wheelset Black, 15x110/12x148mm, Shimano/SRAM

Stan's NoTubes Crest MK3 29in Boost Wheelset pairs lightweight speed and big hit durability to rock any cross country course
The new MK3 platform sees the internal rim width bump out two millimeters from its EX predecessor to support the trend towards burlier tires, with an even lower profile for unbeatable tubeless reliability
These wheels will spin up fast and weather the bumps to deliver you to the end of the trail flat-free and looking forward to the next adventure. The Crest utilizes Stan's trademark Bead Socket Technology (BST) , featuring low profile sidewalls that provide a better tire bead seat and allow for a host of benefits compared to standard rims with higher sidewalls
When setup as tubeless, BST provides an exceptional seal and allows the tire to hold more air volume in contrast to standard rims that hold the bead and extra 2-4mm below the edge
With BST, the tire maintains its full shape for a wider, more stable rolling platform than if the same tire were mounted on a standard rim
Pairing BST features with the ability to run up to 30% lower air pressure in the tubeless system than a standard tube setup results in exceptional tire stability, better handling, solid cornering, and improved control out on the course
These rims are also compatible with standard tubes, with the lower sidewall drastically reducing pinch flat risk by reducing the amount of protruding material for the tube to pinch against
This means less time sitting in the dirt wrestling with a flat at the side of the trail and more time out on your favorite loops
Stan's laces the Crest MK3 rims to its Neo hub set, which features smooth-spinning, oversized chrome bearings that glide on a stiff, strong, swaged axle
The Neo holds the bearings at a wider stance for a claimed threefold increase in strength compared to standard hub designs and boasts 4 precision pawls that simultaneously engage a forged steel 36-tooth ratchet ring for snappy engagement
Stan's incorporates its new S...

Zipp 404 NSW Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset Black, SRAM/Shimano, 11-speed

Zipp 404 NSW Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset Black, SRAM/Shimano, 11-speed

The aerodynamic obsessives at Zipp have continually impressed us with their inability to leave winning designs well enough alone
The 404 NSW Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset is the latest fruit of their restless tinkering, and it improves on the already impressively improved 404 Firestrike model
These improvements start with a claimed weight that's 65g lighter than the Firestrike equivalent and 135g lighter than the Firecrest
The improvements continue in three other key areas: aerodynamics (of course) , the freehub, and braking
We'll get to the hub shortly but, this being Zipp, we're inclined to focus first on the rim
We're always ready to welcome any wind-taming benefits, but we're actually a little more excited about the improved braking
The rims are equipped with an updated version of Zipp's Showstopper brake track, which enjoyed an impressive debut on the Firestrike 404 but has already been improved for the NSW model
It's still imbued with the same silicon carbide particles, but the direction-specific grooves have increased in number and changed in depth
The original Showstopper netted some pretty impressive stopping across all conditions, but Zipp assures us that the new version is even better
The upshot is you can hold speed longer while approaching a corner, braking later and gaining tiny increments of time with each bend or switchback
You can also, you know, stop reliably when obstacles like darting dogs, inattentive motorists, or run-off debris on a fast canyon descent make unexpected cameos in your ride
Ok, we now return to the subject you probably expected to be the headline for a new Zipp wheel
The brand's signature Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control (ABLC) dimpling returns with a new designation
It's called SawTooth Technology, and it consists of ABLC dimples applied in a single pattern repeated in 12 discrete swathes (or nodes) across the rim's surface, looking much like the strokes of a paint brush
Zipp's description of SawTooth's eff...
