Since Knight Composites is a debut manufacturer and the 35 Carbon Fibre/DT Swiss 240S Road Wheelset is the label's top-end, do-it-all model, you won't be surprised to learn that the wheels are being touted as nothing short of revolutionary
Refreshingly, the Knight 35 actually lives up to the promised aerodynamic gains and impeccable build quality
With the inclusion of DT Swiss' venerable 240s hub set, the wheelset also manages to reach a claimed weight of 1,404g -- 78g and 136g lighter than two ubiquitous leading models -- so the Knight 35's revolutions are aerodynamic for flats and light for climbs
Like much of the cycling world, you may be unfamiliar with this new manufacturer
We won't go too far into the details of Knight's history except to note that the collective resume of the three founders reads like a checklist of all the names we've come to associate with carbon aerodynamics in cycling
Since the founders' work has largely defined the current industry standards, you might not be surprised to learn that Knight was formed as a vehicle to push those designs even further
Toward this end, Knight developed its Trailing Edge Aerodynamic Manipulation Technology (Team Tech) , which refocuses the aerodynamics of the wheel
Instead of creating an aerodynamic leading edge, or even just an aerodynamic tire-to-rim transition, TEAM Tech designs wheels as part of a bicycle-wide system of aerodynamics that includes tires, rims, fork, and frame
This system began with Computational Fluid Dynamics software, proceeded through no fewer than two rounds of wind tunnel testing, and ate up hundreds of test models to produce the Knight 35 alone
The result of the laborious TEAM Tech process is a cross-section that describes a tapered parabola rather than the sharp point of a NACA airfoil or the overly-rounded U shape of wheels that are dominating the market today -- and that Knight's founders were instrumental in creating
This new shape meets TEAM Tech's mandate by gradua...

Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Road Wheel - Tubular Black, Rear, SRAM/Shimano

Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Road Wheel - Tubular Black, Rear, SRAM/Shimano

The latest version of Zipp's 404 Firecrest Carbon Tubular Road Wheel features a few big changes that further improve the rims' structural integrity
Given that the previous design was already proven on the most punishing courses in cycling (think stones) , the changes are welcome even if they're unnecessary
The dimpling of Advanced Boundary Layer Control (ABLC) also sees some changes, returning with a higher count and a redesigned dispersion pattern
Along with the rims' signature bulge, ABLC also helps improve stability at common cycling yaw angles by directing side forces more toward the steering axis
We definitely appreciate ABLC -- if for no other reason than that it's become a staple in the peloton, winning races under names ranging from Cancellara to Armistead -- but we're actually a bit more juiced about the Visco-Elastic Constrained Layer Control (VCLC) and Carbon Bridge technologies that Zipp is rolling out
VCLC is similar to a construction model that we're seeing more and more in high-end frame manufacturing, especially among the venerable Italian names
It involves, to deconstruct Zipp's initialism, constraining a visco-elastic layer between the wheels' carbon fiber layers in order to increase the structure's ability to absorb and control road noise
As mentioned above, we're used to seeing this in racing frames, but Zipp may be the only manufacturer to bring it to wheels
The Carbon Bridge design incorporates Kevlar threads in the carbon layup to take advantage of Kevlar's 350% greater resistance to impact
The benefits throughout the wheel are obvious, but higher durability is especially welcome at the tire mounting surface, which is often the first area to take a hit, and Zipp claims that the 404's durability under duress jumps by just over 40%
Zipp even goes so far as to make the joke that the wheels are practically bulletproof
The rims are anchored by Zipp's new 77 and 177 hubs in the front and back, respectively
The new hub model features...

ENVE SES 2.2 Wheelset - Tubular Black, Shimano/SRAM 11-Speed, DT Swiss 240

ENVE SES 2.2 Wheelset - Tubular Black, Shimano/SRAM 11-Speed, DT Swiss 240

If you paid attention to the Tour this year, then you were undoubtedly struck by the underdog success and tenacity of the MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung Team, which made history once as the first African-registered team at the Grande Boucle and again with the first African rider to wear the polka dot jersey
This team stole the hearts of the cycling world with its class and determination to fight it out for stage wins against the goliaths of the World Tour, all while rolling on the new ENVE SES 2
2 Tubular Wheelset
Built specifically to help the team conquer the giant mountains of The Tour, these featherweight wheels are now available to all of us whether we're attacking the European peloton or trying to eke out those last few seconds to conquer that coveted local KOM
Mountain roads bring with them a special set of specifications and necessary robustness in braking capabilities
ENVE tackles those requirements head-on with a brand-new, molded-in, textured brake surface paired with the new ENVE black brake pads for a claimed 30% improvement in braking performance over ENVE's previous models
The new combination also makes for more consistent braking across both wet and dry conditions
When you're dropping through switchbacks into an unexpected thunderstorm, it's reassuring to know you can trust the braking surface to do what it's supposed to do and get you to the valley floor safely, rubber side-down
In designing the 2
2, ENVE shifts the focus slightly away from pure drag reduction with a laser-focused lock on weight reduction to make this a stiff, featherweight climber to fly up the mountains
In contrast to the rest of ENVE's SES line of wheels, which feature differing rim profiles for the front and rear, the 2
2 maintains the same 25mm depth and 27mm external rim width across both wheels specifically designed to house on-trend 25mm tires for a smooth, forgiving, and more efficiently rolling ride across the miles
Even with the 2
2 diverging slightly from its...

Mavic CXR Ultimate 60 Wheelset - Clincher Black, Shimano/SRAM 11-Speed

Mavic CXR Ultimate 60 Wheelset - Clincher Black, Shimano/SRAM 11-Speed

If you've been waiting to take the plunge into the world of deep dish rims but aren't sold on the reliability and braking power of full carbon, the Mavic CXR Ultimate 60 Clincher Wheelset is worth a close look
While it may at first be overshadowed by its full-carbon, tubular siblings, the CXR 60 C is not to be dismissed as simply a budget option in the CXR family
It comes with a few advantages of its own, not limited to its wallet-friendly aluminum construction, all while delivering aerodynamic advantages almost identical to its tubular siblings
Mavic trusts its own Maxtal aluminum in the initial rim construction, a material that sets itself apart from other aluminum alloys with its higher strength-to-weight ratio compared to standard 6061 alloy
It creates rims that are lighter and 30% stronger than 6061 alloy
After Maxtal, Mavic adds a 12k carbon fairing to the rim, shaving extra grams that a full aluminum construction would've added
This blended construction method delivers a rim with all of the aerodynamic advantages of deep dish carbon, along with aluminum's ability to take on daily abuse
The 60mm depth is versatile enough for triathlon, TTs, and criteriums, and they're less unpredictable than the deeper 80mm CXRs when the wind picks up
The key advantage the CXR 60 Clinchers enjoy over their tubular siblings is Mavic's innovative Exalith II brake track
The textured aluminum surface offers incredible durability and reduces braking distance by 18% compared to conventional alloy braking surfaces in any weather
When combined with the welded rim joints, Exalith II creates a balanced wheel that won't shudder under hard braking forces
Like the rest of the CXR family, the CXR 60 Clinchers employ a NACA-inspired aerodynamic profile, but each model -- clincher or tub, 60 or 80mm -- features a slightly different profile adapted to its design, wind-tunnel tested and fine-tuned along each of the points of contact between air and rim
Though the profiling is im...

Stan's NoTubes Grail Team Disc Wheelset Black, 15QR/12x142 TA, Shimano/SRAM, Centerlock

Stan's NoTubes Grail Team Disc Wheelset Black, 15QR/12x142 TA, Shimano/SRAM, Centerlock

The Grail Team Disc Wheelset is Stan's NoTubes' answer to the call for a versatile wheelset that can handle a wide variety of tire pressures and disciplines
Whether you're slicing through mud in a local 'cross race, attacking a road race climb, or embarking on a gravel adventure, the Grails are up to the challenge with Stan's renowned tubeless reliability along for the ride
These wheels utilize the BST-R rim profile, a twist on Stan's signature tubeless technology that's compatible with tires ranging from 25mm to 40mm wide
The Grail's BST-R shape was designed specifically to handle narrower tires and higher tire pressures for a resulting wider PSI range than standard BST rims
Similar to standard BST, BST-R features low profile sidewalls that provide a better seat for the tire bead and allow for a heap of benefits compared to standard rims with higher sidewalls
When setup as tubeless, BST provides an exceptional seal while allowing the tire to hold a greater volume of air than standard rims that place the bead 2-4mm below the edge
This interface lets the tire maintain its full shape for a wider, more stable rolling platform than if the same tire were mounted on a standard rim
Pairing BST with the ability to run up to 30% lower air pressure than on a standard clincher wheel results in more stability, better handling, solid cornering, and better overall control
These rims are also compatible with standard tubes, and the lower sidewall drastically reduces pinch flat risk by reducing the amount of material present for the tube to pinch against
This means less time running to the pit with a flat and more time battling for position out on the course
Stan's laces the Grail Team Disc rims to its new Neo hub set featuring smooth-spinning, oversized chrome bearings that glide on a stiff, strong, swaged axle
The Neo holds the bearings at a wider stance for a claimed threefold increase in strength compared to standard hub designs
Though its ten-degree engagemen...
